Sustainably Built helped Coburn Development through the entire process of LEED-H certification for these two homes. The 2nd and 3rd homes to be certified in Boulder, these homes both reached HERS scores of 42, even though the building code at the time only required a standard score of 100. The homes achieved the LEED for Homes Silver certification.
"On the north city limits of Boulder, a group of visionary architects, developers, and builders took over an abandoned drive-in theater site, and over several years transformed it into a human-scale walkable mixed-use neighborhood. Today it is a lively place with a park, restaurants, live-work spaces, affordable housing, and a community garden.
Coburn Development played a primary role in the project, as both architect and builder. Over the course of the project we improved the energy-efficiency goals of our buildings, and increased our commitment to environmentally responsible building practices. As we approached the last two residences in the project, we took on the challenge of building two LEED for Homes certified houses, and we engaged Adam Stenftnagel of Sustainably Built as energy-rater and key member of the LEED team.
Adam dug into the project with his usual gusto. He helped us test one of our previous buildings so we could obtain baseline data for air infiltration. He got us up to speed on HERS rating and LEED requirements. He helped us connect with our LEED provider, and participated in a dynamic meeting where we refined our LEED strategy and points. Adam worked side-by-side with the construction team, inspecting and testing the buildings, and also kept us on track in the office as we assembled the documentation for the LEED certification.
The result – Coburn is proud to be the builder of two of the first LEED for Homes certified residences in Boulder. And two families are delighted to be living in energy-efficient and comfortable homes. Adam Stenftnagel and Sustainably Built helped provide the energy, the know-how, and the momentum to make this accomplishment possible.
